The Leprosy Colony Program
Location: Delhi, Faridabad
Duration: 1-12 weeks
Hours: 25-40 hours per week
Food: (3 times a day)
Room: Host family or hostel
Project Summary
People living with Leprosy in India due to local superstitions have unfortunately become social outcasts and have been forced to live together segregated from society into a Leprosy Colony. Volunteers have a chance to bring happiness to so many who are forbidden to leave the Colony.
Volunteer responsibilities
Volunteers will often be involved in counseling activities, teaching English, playing, coloring, singing, dancing, skill-sharing and training activities, rendering help in HIV/AIDS awareness as well as teaching and demonstrating the importance of dental hygiene. Volunteers in the past have purchased toothbrushes and toothpaste for the entire village demonstrating and teaching dental hygiene to not only the children, but the adults as well! This is not mandatory however getting creative and thinking ‘out of the box’ helps the children live more fulfilling lives.
Skill/Qualifications
Though no experience or skill is needed, volunteers joining the Leprosy Colony program in India should have patience, flexibility and a generous/compassionate spirit.
Room & Board
Volunteering Love arranges room, board and food (3 meals a day) from the beginning of your stay to the completion of your project. Volunteers will stay with a host family/hostel with accommodations including a separate bedroom area specified for volunteers as well as a communal bathroom setting. Volunteering Love employs a local staff near the projects (Delhi, Faridabad, Gurgaon) allowing a staff member to meet volunteers whenever necessary. Volunteers will have the telephone number to the in-country coordinator as well should any further assistance be needed.
